Myths:

  1. Only "goths" or "emos" self harm. People who are labeled as "normal" by society self injure too. It doesn't make you "goth" or "emo" if you self harm.

  2. Only over dramatic, hormonal teenage girls self harm. Perhaps one of the worst myths about self harm is that only females self injure. Self harm affects all races, genders, and sexualities.

  3. People only harm their arms. This is obviously untrue. Victims harm their arms, legs, and sometimes stomach area and/or wherever the believe they should. Whether it depends on how easy it is to cover up or how much pain there will be, people don't just harm their arms.

  4. People who self injure do it for attention. While few people do self injure for attention, self harm is usually covered up and not flaunted, as it would be if someone was doing it for attention.

  5. You are mentally "messed up" or must have a mental illness if you self harm. It does not mean you are "messed up" if you self harm. If you self harm it means that you are probably dealing with really difficult things and it has become too hard for you to cope.

  6. Self harm is artistic or some sort of trend. Self harm isn't cool, pretty, or funny. It isn't "tragically beautiful" or romantic. It doesn't make you more interesting if you self harm.
